How to choose a table tennis table?
What is the best ping pong table? There’s not a simple answer as it depends on various circumstances. Do you want to use it inside or outside? How much space do you have? What is your budget? Is a standard, quality board enough for you or do you need a top class one?
Let’s divide the tables into a few categories:
Indoor or Outdoor?
Indoor: These are the most popular. Their biggest advantage is that the manufacturer don’t have to use aluminum composite for the top (to provide more resistance during outdoor use) – which means the playing capabilities are better and they are also cheaper. So most shoppers opt for an indoor table.
On the other hand they cannot be used outside as they lack any protection against sun or rain. Even using them in a garage for example can damage the material due to varying humidity.
Outdoor: Instead of a traditional wooden board you’ll mostly find a thin waterproof aluminum composite top on these tables. It presents much better durability in harsh conditions (resistance to sun, rain or moisture) so it enables outdoor use without any problems.
However, it also comes at a price, the bounce is slightly worse and they are also more expensive.
Full size or Midsize?
Full size is the standard but if you are short on space, a midsize table might be a great alternative. It offers the same height but only a 2/3 of the full size so it easily fits into every room. Another advantages are that it’S cheaper and you don’t have to assemble it, you just unfold the legs and attach the net.
But what about the playing capabilities you ask. These tables are surprisingly solid and sturdy and use the same board as full size recreational tables – so it plays and bounces nice.
Of course, a smaller table plays differently. It doesn’t use exactly the same ratio as full size boards and you will miss the back of the table at first. But people get used to this size pretty quickly and the games are just as intense.
